NCFR'S Commitment in China
Cancer
has become China's top killer causing 1.5 million deaths annually.
Chinese make up more than one quarter of all cancer sufferers
in the world. Today's China faces cancer problems associated
with the developing country (cervical, oesophagus, and liver)
as well as the cancer problems associated with the developed
country (breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal).
Whether in northern China's
poverty-stricken Cixian county in Hebei Province, or in
Shanghai, China's most developed city, cancer treatments
are not widely available to cancer patients. And without
financial support, cancer treatments are unaffordable to
many Chinese; more than 40% of the estimated 2.5 million
annual new cancer patients in China do not seek treatment.
NFCR is the leader in cancer
research, funding scientists in fields like chemistry, molecular
biology, pharmacology, genetics and medicine to apply their
knowledge to cancer problems in a team setting. Since 1973
NFCR has spent more than $230 million to support basic-science
research as well as cancer prevention education. Fortune
magazine editor Clifton Leaf, described NFCR's approach
as a model for supporting research that will cure cancer.
NFCR is a leading research charity in the fight against
cancer, funding the most promising research in angiogenesis,
metastasis, targeted cancer therapies, chemoprevention,
and prevention education.
Current Activities:
NFCR has supported cancer research in China since 1982:
NFCR held its first conference with the
Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai in October, 1982.
Provided research scholarships to support
Chinese scientists to get training in the United States
and Europe when Chinafirst opened its door to the world.
In 2000, NFCR set up an NFCR Center for
Molecular Medicine at the Institute of Medicinal Biotechnology/Chinese
Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing.
In 2002 NFCR provided the seed fund to
establish a joint lab between Dana Farber Institute and
Tianjin University
In 2003 NFCR in partnership with the Tianjin
Cancer Institute and Hospital, opened a Tissue Bank at the
Tianjin Cancer Institute.
In 2005, NFCR in partnership with the Chinese
Academy of Medical Sciences and the Asian Fund for Cancer
Research (AFCR), organized a three-day BioFunding Summit
in Beijing. This international think-tank forum was so successful
that editors of the international cancer journal, Oncology
Research, devoted an entire issue to the conference.
In 2006, NFCR established a new non-profit
organization based in Hong Kong, the Asian Fund for Cancer
Research (www.AFCR.org.hk) . AFCR's mission is to fight
cancer through providing public education and supporting
innovative research in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
of cancer.
Future Initiatives:
Supplemental Cancer Insurance Program
Institute for Clinical Research Excellence
(ICRE).
NFCR Center for Global Collaboration.
To Your Health Educational Series.
International Cancer Research and Prevention
Summit in Hong Kong.
Individualized
Treatment for Cancer Patients.
Summary:
With twenty years of organizational experience in the
People's Republic of China, demonstrated expertise in
funding innovative basic and clinical research, and several
native-Chinese in the management team, NFCR is well positioned
to serve as a devoted partner to the Chinese medical research
communities, contributing greatly towards China's goal
of building a harmonious and advanced society.

SENATOR
BILL BRADLEY'S WORDS
To encourage contributions to our Nation's future from Americans
of Asian descent requires a commitment from each of us to get
beyond the stereotypes, to move past simplistic discussions
of race relations which only recognize black and white,
to realize the depth and diversity of the many different
people we call Asian-Pacific-Americans,
to reach out to the Asian-American physicist in New
Mexico, garment worker in San Francisco, doctor in New Jersey,
restaurant owner in Chicago, and teacher in Los Angeles,
to recognize that the surnames Nguyen, Patel, and Chang
are just as American as Kennedy, Johnson, and Bush,
to speak out against anti-Asian talk and violence where
we hear or see it,
to realize that contact brings understanding, and like
my roommate in college, prejudice withers in an air of friendship.
And when that happens, Americans from Asia will be a living,
contributing, and integrated part of American life. And we
will, in every way, be a richer society because of it.
